HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE FROM THE HAFTAR STUDIO!

I wish you all a very Happy, Healthy New Year! 2013 is going to be a very special year as the Haftar family welcomes a lovely new member to our clan.

There is great momentum and excitement as we move towards my son's wedding. We are delighted to welcome his beautiful fiance into our family. She is so kind demonstrating amazing compassion and empathy. I love her big warm smile and sparkling eyes. I cannot wait to see her in her wedding dress. I have seen pictures of it in a magazine but she will be breath taking.

I have also been working on a new aspect in my art, a certain project has been calling to me and I have been indulging myself deliciously embroiling myself in the new adventure. I look forward to sharing some of these new works on my website in late March early April. So much fun to be a little mysterious, don't you think?

MARGARET MARTIN WILL BE MISSED!

A great artist, instructor and friend has passed away.

As soon as the Pelham Art Association membership new that Margaret was coming to do a workshop the phone at Mary Powley's never stopped ringing. Everyone loved coming to hear Margaret teach. She  so willingly shared her knowledge and talent with us. I used to wait for my first glimpse of what Margret was wearing, she dressed in the colours she painted and carried it off with a dramatic flare!
The first time I was exposed to Margaret's work it equally fascinated me and took my breath away. I couldn't take my eyes off the piece it just filled me up to the brim. It filled my heart with the warm vibrant colours, the rich contrasts in value and the fluid movement in the composition. I will miss Margaret as will our whole art group.

FOCUSING IN ON WHAT IS IMPORTANT

In my new website, I had my web designer add a section in the Gallery called"Series". I wanted to set a section/area aside where I could show specific directions or places that I am exploring with my art. It is wonderful to go exploring, leap into a new adventure of learning and development. This is very freeing, when you allow yourself to play, re invent, use new materials or better still old materials in a new way. I am sure that some of this is very trite as this is the underling beat of an artists inner drummer.

I decided recently to explore SPACE DIVISION on a canvas and how the use of COLOUR or lack of colour can be used to define each area in a landscape. I love the Niagara area and have decided to use local landscapes to act as supporting parts in this exploration. I will do two exercises using "The Glen" and two from "Balls Falls". Plus, two from beautiful Prince Edward County.

Now off to the studio to create!!!

Municipal Government & Funding the Arts

Today I worked on a speech I have been asked to give on behalf of artists who have participated in the Art On The Wall Gallery in Welland.

As I perused the archives of the Task Force, I am disgusted anew by the lack of comprehension this municipal government has of the importance of the ARTS to our culture. It's as if the soul has been ripped out of our city. Obstructionism abounds - if you are in the arts do not expect any funding from the local government. But, if you get together as a group promote & fund yourselves we will gladly take full credit for what you have done.

The general attitude of this city government seems to be - Artists should be grateful to have a place to display their work. After all, it doesn't take work, time, thought or effort to create it.  When does a lawyer, accountant, garbageman, truck driver, waitress,  etc. do their job for free and be expected to show unflinching gratitude when they do? This is ridiculous of course because they need the money to support their lives and families ---as do artists.

It is no wonder with this attitude, that Art on the Water in Welland also assumed that artists should not receive stipends for loaning their work to help make the Art on Water a viable project. This local " art" project was not well planned, thought out or executed in it's opening event in Welland, so much so that no dignitaries from the council or the mayors office attended the event. Perhaps they were not even asked.

The lack of understanding on part of this municipal government is sad as the council and mayor are considered educated people.

I think why I find this so difficult to tolerate here in Welland when other Niagara Municipalities "GET IT", The arts reflect like a mirror the soul of the community.

I will speak on behalf of the artists and for my friends who have fought so hard for this project which is now in its 5th year and I will consider it an honour to do so.

Thanks Lori, Carol and Dianna.

Christmas Show Scotia Bank Convention Centre

It is getting busy preparing for the Christmas Show in the convention centre. I was asked if I'd be willing to show my work and donate 20% of my sales to the Niagara Humane Society. How could I refuse, animals have and always will be a very important part of my life and that of my family. I have had the honour of living with Irish Setters ( Danny Boy & Shawn), German Shepherd ( Gwendolyn), Fox Terrier ( Trevor) and a sweet little Spaniel called Dandelion, gerbils, mice, rabbits, guppies, goldfish, and a plethora of cats from American short hairs to Siamese.

I have created a new painting in honour of all the dogs that have been in my life. I called the Beagle puppy "Sam". Sam will be at the Convention Centre and he will be up for sale.

I have received wonderful response to the new website. Thank you for those who gave me their critiques. Melissa did an amazing job.

SOMETHING EXCITING THIS WAY COMETH!!!!

There is something very exciting a foot at the Haftar studio, an announcement will be made shortly. Keep in touch.

In September, I visited Prince Edward County with a group of artists. It is developing into a wonderful place for artists. I worked mainly in graphite and acrylic. Concentrating on the interesting architecture and local landscapes/wineries.

I am also working on a new series of paintings inspired by photo's from my son Bryan. In this series I am focusing on the impact of spacial divisions and colour as they impact realistic landscapes.

I am also working on Art In The Park 2013. This will be our 2nd opportunity to construct an artist village in the beautiful Town of Pelham. Last years show was a fantastic success!!

Talk again soon.

"HANG, TIDY & CLEAN,HANG, TIDY & CLEAN"

I decided yesterday that I needed to get the paintings out of their boxes and back up on the walls of my gallery. It took all afternoon. Today, I have been cleaning out and reorganizing my studio space. Hopefully this will help get me inspired to work on a new painting. I have had one in mind for awhile-sometimes it really helps when they sit on the back burner for awhile. I have even scraped and cleaned the floor under my easel. I 've been thinking about getting a cheap scrap piece of rugging to put under my easel to protect the stone floors. I have been discussing the possibility with another artist of sharing a studio space. We are both  wanting to reclaim the lower level of our houses. While cleaning up today I had to find space for a years stash of  new canvases. I find it much cheaper to buy in bulk.If I had a separate studio I'd be able to store them there. Oh well, that's for another day. I think I'll call my friend and see if she can get in touch with the realtor.

SPECIAL THANKS TO MAYOR DAVE

My first meeting with Mayor Dave and Vickie was very exciting I had finally found a group of people committed to the arts and who understood that the arts act like a mirror reflecting the heart, soul and mind set of a community. The idea was to promote the Pelham artists through an original art show. I could hardly wait to tell my art friends - they were going to have a hard time believing me. Sports sports and more sports seems to be the name of the game in our area, after all we are Canuks were hockey reigns supreme and yes we all agree for the need to exercise regularly, no question,

But, art feeds the soul, it reflects the health of our community and YIPPPEEEE Mayor Dave gets it!

After this initial meeting, many more were to follow  with the Summerfest committee Gary, Julie, Bea, Todd, Katie & Vickie etc At every turn I was offered constructive suggestions and offers of help. They all made my life as show organizer easier. We had a plan. We executed it. Problems that a rose were dealt with promptly and professionally.

Kudo's you all of you.

We actually created something very special that has an amazing vibe.

Thanks Mayor Dave & the Summerfest Committee. I look forward to working on 2013's show.

FABULOUS FIRST ANNUAL ART IN THE PARK

Thanks to the Town of Pelham for inviting us to start an all original, juried fine art show which was an integral part Pelham Summerfest. "Come CHill on The Hill" - we artists had a blast! Excellent support from, the Pelham Summerfest Committee made this a great experience for me as the organizer of the  Art show. I could not have done this without the help of my friend Jim Kerr. I appreciate his advise. Jim always amazes me even when complications of diabetes are making his feet and legs so sore he hangs in, encouraging me along the way.

We would not have a show without the artists. I'd like to thank them all again and again. They are the heart beat of the show, displaying their wonderful creativity. You ROCK!

We had a great loss in our art community with the death of Maria Klokkou from cancer last week and her funeral was on Friday, she was best friend of Pat Paquin. Pat went to the funeral Friday, but was back in her tent for the start of the show Friday afternoon, Larry Wing had just had stomach surgery to remove a cancer these are just a couple of the remarkable artists I am honoured to have had showing with me at this First Annual  Art In The Park.

A very special vibe was wafted  through out the show with the music from some great bands, specially Kindred Spirit , warm summer days, sparkling white tents of the artists village, friendly artists chatting together sitting at tables under large locust trees, talking art with locals who dropped by to view the show and buy original pieces of art.

What can I say but we all had a wonderful time. I am very excited to start planning the 2nd annual show.

COMING SOON - ART IN THE PARK- FONTHILL

Artists are now in motion gearing up for Art In The Park. Artists calling yesterday to my studio asking about last minute details. Potters have their kilns filled with interesting and new pieces. Painters completing new pieces or  they are off to the framers.

I cancelled a last minute media day yesterday, when I spoke with the reporter from Niagara This Week he had indicated that he'd put a picture in with the article already going into the paper this week or he'd try and get it in next week prior to the show. But most of the local Pelham/Welland artists I contacted were unable to attend due to work or previous commitments with family. Next year we will work out a earlier Media Day for the artists.

I am excited about the quality and variety of art that will be shown at the premier Art In The Park show.    The variety in mediums include glass art dichroic & cathederal glass, watecolour, oil acrylic, artistic & functional pottery, pencil & charcoal, textiles & glass

For a little peek preview please go to www.pinterest.art in the park.com

Come have a glass of wine ( Niagara College Vintners) and wander through a fabulous art show & find some original treasures to make your very own.

This will be last post until after the show. I'd like to thank Mayor Dave & his team for their continued support of the arts. They have been a great pleasure to work with and have been instrumental in making ART IN THE PARK a show that artists and patrons will want to come back to for many years to come.

To my fellow participating artists, thank you for your faith in the team that put this show together. I wish you all a successful show!

PLEIN AIR IN FONTHILL

Packed up paints and graphite, picked Jim up at the Seaway and drove to Pelham Library. It was a lovely day to paint outside. Jim had us go over to the Bandshell were he suggested we look around and decide what we wanted to paint. He demoed with water colour. He discussed some of the difficulties painting outside ie continually changing light and shadows, overload of information which can make it challenging to decide on a composition. Jim's composition included a road sign and a hanging basket with the Pelham Library in he background. Two other artists worked on a similar composition to Jim's. Diane and I worked on different compositions of the back of the buildings on Pelham St. My composition included the church in behind Beamers and part of Peace Park. I decided to continue my experimenting with liquid graphite. I worked on 300lb Arches watercolour with mixed results. I definitely want to continue with this medium. Practice! Practice ! Practice!

NIagara Night of Arts & Art In The Park

So exciting, had a meeting with the rep's from the town of Pelham & rep's from the Region, plans for the inaugural launch of the Niagara Night of Arts is well under way. All the local artists involved in the arts are being encouraged to step forward and preform. It is wonderful to see young emerging artists being encouraged to display their arts. My friend Monique who is a fantastic potter doing both artistic and functional pottery, her son is  a musician and is going to preform at the Niagara night of the Arts and many young people have submitted sculpture , 3 dimensional work etc. ART ROCKS this community! i am very proud to be a very small part of this amazing event.

Niagara Night of Arts is part of Pelham Summerfest which is a four day event. The fine artists that will be showing and selling their original work in Summerfest's Art In The Park are gearing up for the show everyone is enthusiastic and looking forward to launching this new art show. The support & help from the Town is greatly appreciated.

Tired Feet & A Dear Friend

Home and tired. Artistry By The Lake in NOTL was interesting and fun. Made more so by selling some paintings, always boosts ones self esteem. Best of all my friend & mentor James came on Sunday to sit the show and help me pack up.Artists egos need to be gently stroked on a very regular basis to keep them motivated to produce and experiment. Met some lovely people. One of my clients came and I got to meet their new baby boy, very sweet. They purchased a little painting I did of Longfellow PA. I am also very excited that another lady purchased "Summer Rain." Tomorrow I have to deliver a painting that is going out on a "trail" basis. I really hope the couple will love it. Fingers and toes crossed.

IRONING OUT THE WRINKLES

Meeting with Todd and Jim went very well today. We have ironed out some glitches and the new layout will actually allow me to add 3 - 4 more artists. I'll be looking to pick up some artists at Artistry by the Lake on the long weekend. This is a very exciting and unexpected new development!

Jim and I returned to the library for drawing class and a friend, fellow art instructor dropped in for a chat. She made reference to the Art on Water and what a poor performance it was. I mentioned the article in the local paper and the glowing report written by the reporter. She was shocked that such an inaccurate picture was painted.

On a cheerier note, I went to see the Rose Festival art show at the Seaway Mall. It was good to see  many amateurs & students had submitted their work. It was intermingled with professional artists. Difficult for amateurs and students to compete for "Publics Favourite". The show was hung well and looked interesting,. It was easy to view the work. Winners are to be announced tonight. Stay Tuned.

Pelham Summerfest & Niagara Night of the Arts

Tomorrow morning, I have a meeting with Todd and Jim to get an approval for a layout of Art in The Park for Summerfest. We are going to have the wine and beer Garden in front of us and the Jazz stage.
Hopefully, we will get the approval for the changes we wish to make. The artists are enthusiastic about the new show and the opportunity to develop it into a well loved event. The crisp white tents of the artists  will be chuck full of fabulous original art for sale.

It will be exciting to incorporate with the Niagara Night of Arts on Friday July 20th. We are the first of 26 participating Niagara communities.

Summerfest is developing into a great community event and I am excited to be a part of it.

As manager of the Art in the Park, it is wonderful to work for a dedicated, inspired group of hard working people from the Town. Mayor Dave is very supportive of this initiative.

An Addendum to "ART ON WATER"

As with any new venture glitches happen, it is unfortunate that all the good work Amber did came to such a very disappointing end. Better luck with your future events.

WOW! WOW! WOW! "ART ON WATER"

Went early(7:30 show to start at 8pm) to get a good parking spot and vantage point for Art On Water. As I pulled into park I realized that a fellow artist was getting out of her car beside me. Linda had driven into town from St. Catharines. Linda asked where the event was being held. I knew from talking with AJ that the show was going to be on the canal behind City Hall in Welland, however there was no signage to direct people to exactly where the event was taking place. I saw a "chip truck" and a black tent with a large sign re. Volunteers facing the parking lot. When I walked up to the tent, I realized that it had been set up so we artists could put out our business cards or other advertising for our respective businesses. I also noticed two banners flanking the side of the tent facing the bridge over the canal not the parking lot! What were people thinking???? These signs could not be seen from the parking lot where everyone was arriving to see the show!

I met another friend ,Tom who had been hired to photograph all the artists work. This was being done so there would be a consistent end product. While talking with Tom, another artist spoke up and said all she did was sent in 4 jpegs  as she could not make the photo shoot. Did consistency go out the window?

In the background, someone began to sing( no idea who this was, she was never introduced to the audience), we continued to chat and watched as a few more people came and they began to wander down the hill closer to the canal. Tom asked me as he looked at his watch,"What time does the show start?" I replied," 8 pm." "What time is it?" "It's quarter after eight," replied Tom.  We decided that when the singer started to sing, that was the opening. Weird, right. No fan fare,no speech from the mayor of Welland or even his deputy or a council man. No one from the organizing committee to welcome everyone  or thank the participating artists- nothing.

A half hour goes by, Tom checks his watch again, lots of background singing - same preforming artist. Nothing is happening - more waiting, waiting - see a boat move on the far side of the canal. My friend Jean joins us. Jean said, as she was walking towards us she could see the water wall was working on the far side of the canal on the large screen area. Time passes, more singing, nothing is happening on the screen and no one is saying anything about what's happening. I'm getting tired, I have a busy day on Monday ( classes all day and a 5 o'clock meeting  tomorrow night for Niagara Night of Arts with the Town reps from Pelham and two regional reps.) I tell Tom, Jean and Linda that I'm tired and I'm thinking of going home. Suddenly, out of the corner of my eye I see a small screen on the far side of the canal come to life. Can't make out what is happening on the screen and there is no sound. Then we see what kind of looks like a strange world map show up on the big screen -- then nothing. I leave - it's now 9:30pm

Today (Monday) I received phone calls and emails from several of the other participating artists. All saying they were very disappointed and thought that the $169,000 could have been put to much better use.I was told that the artists and their families(the majority of the audience) all began to leave after the singer announced that there were technical problems with the audio component. This is something that should have been said by an organizer not a performer.

A couple of lovely friends went on facebook to let me know they'd seen my painting. The reason they new it was mine was because they had viewed it previously at the Pelham Art Festival.

Absolute disappointment!

NOTE: I did find out that the event was In the Tribune and a friend has cut out and saved the article for me. I also heard that it was on Cogeco.

ART ON WATER

ART ON WATER - WELLAND

Tomorrow evening at 8pm , behind City Hall Welland along the canal bank will be the one and only presentation of the participating artists work. I have not yet seen in the Tribune or Niagara This Week (local papers) any mention of this presentation. The event has been put on Facebook and Twitter, but many people in our Niagara community do not use or follow social media. It will be interesting to see how many people other than artists and their families show up.

I hope the organizers will reconsider their decision to show this Collection of Niagara Artists work only once.

Stay tuned for an update:

TO NON DEPLUME OR NOT??

June 10th is Niagara Gallery's opening of the 1812 exhibition. It will be interesting to see if "HMS SECORD" wins any prize money or if it sinks. I have great doubts it was done tongue in cheek. My mentor Jim Kerr suggested that I sign the work with a non de plume as it is so far out from what is my norm. I decided to sign it with my grandmothers name. I did this for two reasons, she herself was an artist and she had one heck of a sense of humour.

I decided to paint Laura because she has been such a subject of controversy in my art circles this year. Everyone seems to have an opinion as to where she and her cow walked to warn the British that the Americans were coming. I did a lot of research into the Battle of Chippawa & the war of 1812, learning about who was involved, what they wore (men & women), flags of the British ( it appeared that almost every admiral had his own), ships in the two fleets etc.

I am meeting Jim, (who also put a painting into the competition) tomorrow and we are going to the opening. I think it will be great fun to see all the paintings that were entered. Jim's a fabulous artist. It will be interesting to see what he entered. Hopefully, he will win a prize.

LET THE SHOWS BEGIN --

First Sunday Stroll with the Niagara Etsy Artisan Team went very well for a first time show. Congratulations & thanks to Erin Snow for organizing the event. We had awful weather off and on throughout the day with thunderstorms threatening. Lots of young families came out for the event and Mayor Dave dropped by to see everyone. Blossom bakery was selling yummy treats.

Next up is  Art on Water a project sponsored by the Canadian Government and part of the Niagara Night of Arts Project. Many local Niagara artists are participating. We were asked to bring examples of our work to be photographed and each artist was to be videoed presenting a brief artists statement about their work. Voice overs were to be done for those who could not make the video taping. June 10th at 8pm the one and only presentation will be made behind Welland City Hall on the canal. It will be interesting to see the number of people other than the participating artists who show up.

LOCKED AND LOADED

My day started slowly in prep for tomorrow. As I looked myself in the face I realized that tomorrow I would indeed need to add make up after washing. Oh my! I seldom wear make up, so seldom that I decided I needed to replenish my foundation and blush ( apparently you should be throwing it out after 6 months) mine is a tad past that recommendation by about 5 1/2 years -----or sooo.

I go into my local Shoppers and I am confronted by at least a dozen different cosmetic lines --- conundrum -- does one pay more to look younger or does one pay modestly and wear what all the other teenagers are wearing. I ask the store clerk to give me some advise as my skin is very pale and I cannot tell if the blush is complimentary to my skin tone. No response --- I repeat the question and she tells me what I already know ---"You're very pale she says" -I repeat the question again thinking she didn't processes what I said to her - her response was "Your change is $2.05" --  Oh well I guess this is one reason why I don't wear make up often. I am sure I'll look at least 16 maybe even a little more mature.!

Stellar start:

I drop into the hair salon where I had my hair cut and ( only my hairdresser knows the rest) yesterday, I forgot to pick up the"Shine". Shinny hair now comes in a spray can. Who knew??? I thought it came through good diet. Wrong ------- again!

Next to the library to drop in on Jim. He need some wire and hardware for his paintings. Plus I need to find out if he needs me to pick him up in Niagara Falls in the morning. If he does I will wait and pack the van for the show after I drop him off in the morning. Luckily Jim's son is loaning him his car so he won't need me to pick him up.

Arrive home: Heave Ho, up the stairs and into the van 16 large paintings , 2  - three foot x four foot paintings, 2 bags of support materials, large box of all my lights and electrical cords, my cradle and a basket of small paintings, a ladder and a dolly. All I have to remember to add tomorrow evening is my cash box. I am LOCKED AND LOADED----- BRING IT ON!!!!

Addendum:

Look out Pelham here we come. Sixty Eight fine artists are moving into the Pelham Arena for the Mother's Day Weekend. As I write, there are many high school students and senior public school students labouring to help set up the arena under the watchful eyes of adult volunteers. The stage will be set up and sound systems check so we will be able to rock out at the Gala evening tomorrow.

RUMMAGE, RUMMAGE - TOIL AND----------

Planned out and pulled together paintings to be shown at the festival this weekend. Ran to Staples for some supplies. Re visited the plan, shuffled paintings around. Rummaged for boxes and packing materiala. Really have to be careful with burnished gold frames  as they knick and ding easily.

Printed ID Tags and filled out.( Oh ya, forgot to say that I thoroughly cleaned house last week including my office and I placed my Art Festival envelope in a safe place, so safe I couldn't find it. Thank goodness for friends who bail you out when you get in a pickle!)Began sorting through show baskets finding and adding tools, sponges, business cards etc, Need to add promotional materials for Summerfest and Erin is bring promo for First Sunday Stroll to the show.

Photographed new small paintings, downloaded to IPhoto and then uploaded to Etsy and Pinterest. Hopefully will get them on my website tomorrow. Will helped me today by wiring 7 paintings and commented that I'd forgot to sign one. OMG! What else is new!

I'd also like to make a slide show of paintings that are at the studio and at Gallery 329. I'll be able to take my laptop and have the slide show looping during the show.

On a side note, Lori got confirmation on a couple of questions we had about the "Silver" package for her and Bryans' destination wedding enabling me to send the last revisions for the wedding invitations to Julie. The invitations look very elegant.

Tomorrow things ramp up - have to have all paintings wrapped including the two 3' x 4' with bubble wrap, check that all my lights work, find my white table clothes and unroll my rug and let it lay flat for 48 hours. I'd hate to have lumpy bumps as they are such a tripping hazard.Must find and pack the duc tape so I can tape the edges of my rug down. Wouldn't want my business insurance to go up. It's hefty enough as it is,

I hope & pray that sales at the Festival are good this year for everyone, including me. Last year sales over the year were less then stellar. It gave a whole new meaning to starving artist.

JUST AROUND THE CORNER!!!

Today was a BAM's day. Worked on finishing up two small tulip paintings. Now to start pulling together the PAF show. The Pelham Art Festival is just around the corner. I have gone through my Etsy shop stats to get an idea of paintings that are receiving the most hits. The information is quite useful, to date over 1,800 people world wide have been on the sight and given their general opinion's on the paintings listed.

(I really like the Etsy philosophy of promoting positive reinforcement for all of it's shop owners. It kind of follows along the old saying "if you cannot say something nice, do not say anything at all." If, you like a shop or an item in a shop you can favour it. If you don't you simply shop else where.)

Pelham is always a lot of fun, it's exciting to meet up with friends after a long winter and to see the great new works they have created. I'm looking forward to seeing our clients, friends and family that will come out to the show to shop and lend their enthusiastic support. Saturday night after the show the artists go to the Ross' and party hearty into the wee hours. Those of us who are local bring potluck and my friend Jim can usually be found doing his thing at the Barbie.

I wish all the artists good sales.

I look forward to selling some of my own as well. It would be great to make some extra cash to put in the savings account for my son's wedding in Mexico in 2013. Destination weddings are fun but expensive. I'm not so sure that we can really call Bryan and Lori's wedding a destination wedding as they will be living in Mexico soon.

I need to wire several new paintings, make Id tags, bubble wrap paintings, box them and lay out a rough plan for hanging, check my lighting system, tables, chair. table clothes, lay out my rug and try and flatten it, check show equipment boxes, go over my Pelham Show check list and begin assembling everything in the studio.

I will also make a slide show presentation for my lap top. I think this adds an extra dimension to the show and allows potential customers to have a look at works not being shown at the festival.

These are all good intentions we'll see how far we get tomorrow!

BITS & BOBS

It has been a very busy few weeks. Starting with the opening reception at Rosberg Gallery which went well considering the short notice. Staff were very helpful.Meetings for the Summerfest Art Show and meeting regional representatives regarding the Nights of Art in Niagara. Learning to Pin on Pinterest and how to do links to other social media and websites. Plus, I tried a new medium "graphite" in a puck form that you moisten with a little water from a brush. Results were very pleasing.Plus ,helping planning a destination wedding to Mexico(which is very exciting). Beginning to get ready for the Pelham Art Festival which takes place next weekend. It will be great to see what my friends have been working on over the winter. I think I need a secretary and a housekeeper just to keep me on the straight and narrow with my art.

Niagara & Calgary Cultural Capitals of Canada

Wow! How very exciting that the world will discover our secret. We are a cultural hub twinned with Calgary, Alberta. The Canadian government is celebrating and promoting Canadian culture and we are so fortunate to be artists living and working in the Niagara Peninsula. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to meet with Niagara regional representatives to discuss how this will impact the Pelham Summerfest Art Show and the artists of Pelham.

The Summerfest Art show is a juried professional art show and as a group of professional artists we enjoy mentoring and encouraging amateur artists to hone their skills through classes and workshops like those provided by the Pelham Art Association.

Mary Powley a local professional fine artist and president of the Pelham Art Association works very hard to find professional instructors for the classes & workshops offered by the club. This year we are very pleased that James Kerr a well known Niagara fine artist and retired Commercial Artist is our class instructor. James teaches Drawing, Watercolour and Acrylics. Once a month the association has a workshop and we hire professional fine artists from Canada and the US. At these workshops, you will find both amateur and professional artists woking side by side to develop new skill sets and techniques.

The Pelham Art Association will encourage it's members to participate in the All Call to artists that will be put out by the town of Pelham to actively participate in the Niagara Night of the Arts, Friday, July 20th 2012.

Summerfest First Annual Art Show

I am so excited to be organizing this juried art show for the town of Pelham. Right from Mayor Dave's office down everyone has been very supportive and helpful. It is so very nice to have the full backing of the town. We know that what we are doing will be appreciated. We are all working very hard to have this be a very special event for everyone. The artists have been notified this week if they are in the show and I am very pleased to say we will have an exceptional group of Niagara artists showing and selling their work.Pelham Summerfest in it's second year. The juried art show is a new addition to Summerfest. More news soon. Follow my blog or tweets @patriciahaftar.com

Someone This Way Cometh

Sadie, Sadie beautiful lady. After much discussion, Laura's cow has now been officially named Sadie. After all she is an important component of the story and painting and therefore deserves a name.

I am thing about adding some fabulous native indians who were aiding in the battle.

Soon, Laura will once again cause a bit of a stir when she is formally presented to the public. Keep up with my blogs to see an unveiling of Laura. I'll be interested in any comments you may have.

Laura & her Cow

My friend and mentor Jim suggested that I might enter a painting for the Niagara Gallery's  War of 1812 Competition. Personally, I have heard about, worried about and seen wars through the eye's of television since I was a young child. I remember huddling under our desks at school during an atom bomb drill because Russia planted 90 nuclear war heads in Cuba. Man's inhumanity towards his fellow man. I lack the motivation and inspiration to do a piece about this particular war or any war for that matter. I see only great sorrow for families on both sides of the conflicts.

But,there is a story about a very brave woman Laura Secord who risked her own life to warn the British  general of an imminent American attack during the war of 1812. I find her story interesting enough to make satirical comment. In my art group, there has been much discussion regarding Laura and her cow, mostly about where exactly Laura was living at the time and where exactly she found the general.

Being a Torontonian for most of my life, Laura's comings and goings were not a pressing intellectual problem of mine. I was just happy she warned the general and that we had not become the largest state in the union.( whatever would the Texan's have done!)

I began this painting initially with the idea of having it reflect the present day reality of what used to be a bloody battle field. But, Laura kept popping into my head and the on going dog gnawing on a bone discussion about her true home & where exactly she went to find the british. I discussed this with a fellow artist and he suggested that perhaps I should do a surrealistic painting and add Laura( and her cow) into the mix. So I did a little research on the battle at Chippewa, Laura, cows, row boats & war ships of 1812 and native indians. I gathered up the ideas and started to sketch Laura in a row boat crossing the Chippewa River. It made me giggle and worry about Laura being flipped into the drink with a honking huge cow on top of her ---then where would we have been??? But, what to do with the cow, bossy was an integral part of the story. Not wanting to insult all cows, I made her into a cartoon and put her in the stern of the row boat and had her hold a parasol to keep the sun from getting in her big brown eyes. What an absolutely silly idea! I picked up my paint brush and added this whimsical crazy idea to the realistic landscape.

It makes me laugh to think in 200 years we humans are still so arrogant that we think wars will solve problems.

Laura and her cow is still a work in progress.

(After thought, I think the cows' parisole should have a Union Jack pattern on it.) I think I'll sign this painting with a non de plume ----- maybe,

Solo, Taxes & Things that go Bump in the Night!

Today was prep for the opening of my solo show " The Queen's Backside and the Niagara Peninsula". My friend Jim is coming to lend support tomorrow, which I really appreciate. I have made two trays of gourmet sandwiches and have purchased come pre made goodies. Tomorrow I'll go to Timmy's and get some jugs of coffee. They'll supply cups and condiments.  I hope clients and friends will come. This show has been put together at the last minute with little advertising, We could be eating sandwiches for the next week!

Today was also tax remit day for Haftar Studio. OMG! Last year was a disaster for sales. The economy has certainly tanked and artists are at the bottom of the totem pole. I hope and pray this year will be much better for all artists. "Churchill" was a good start for me for the 2012 year. Perhaps he'll bring good luck!

The Queen's Backside

Thanks to all my dear friends who came out to support me at the opening of my solo show. You all know who you are. Mary you know you are my favourite. (lol) I met some very interesting new artists one gentleman who was a professor of literature from China and who does chinese watercolours and calligraphy and another young man who is trying to make a living as an abstract artist. It was interesting to hear peoples reaction to Woodends. Thank you all for coming to the show.

I'd also like to thank the staff at the Niagara Library who were so accommodating and helpful.

Boxer's or Brief

Churchill prefers boxer's.

He's boxed and delivered to the Canada Post Office in Welland from where he will be shipped out today heading on his journey to Churchill. It would be fabulous if he could video tape & describe the journey from the front seat of the truck&/ or the plane.

Brief: This is the very short version of a much longer tale. Know the size of thy Boxer's after copious phone calls to various expediters last week to ascertain best travel prices and conditions for Churchill. Grace decided he should travel Express Canada Post. I made an assumption as to the size of box and Churchill's approximate weight including all the warm blankets he'd need to go to the far north.Well their was more  emphasis on the ass( as in Jack) than in the umption. This ended up costing an additional $20 + in Churchill's ticket north. Although he weighed 5 lbs less than anticipated his box was approx.16 sq. inches larger than anticipated. Oh my!

I cannot wait till Grace see's Churchill for the first time. I hope it is love at first sight! Then I'll introduce him to all of you.

A very exciting week in the Haftar Studio's. Churchill is off to a new home and My reception at the Rosberg Gallery on Saturday afternoon.

Hear All About It! Churchill Wrapped Up in Welland!

Churchills' picture has been taken ready for his debut in 10 days time on www.patriciahaftar.com, Facebook and Twitter.
Off to the Falls to go to Home Depot for coreplast to support Churchill in his travels.Asked young prepubescent young man for directions - he hadn't a clue about what coreplast was and had a total vacant look on his face when I said it was white plastic formed like cardboard. He was kind enough to find an older employee who knew exactly where to look. 1st part of the mission accomplished, I am know the proud owner of two sheets of 18 x24inch coreplast. Bravo me!

Trying to buy a cardboard box on Easter weekend provide to be more elusive than eggs at an Easter Egg hunt. First stop, the Moving company store - only suitable shaped box was a mirror box - very flimsy and I'd certainly not want to put anything as heavy as a mirror in it - let alone how pricey this flimsy box was.
Then on to UPS - cross town - WOW closed all 3 days of the Holiday weekend. Who knew? Slowly starting to pull ones hair out, it comes to me that Staples might have a packing box as they are a Purolator depot. Merde! No joy there either. Gave up went home.

As I skillfully slide my derriere out of the van inspiration hit!( Often happens when I get off my ----) I have packing boxes from a new shipment of canvases, brilliant!

Went down in the studio found said box, emptied it.collected up tape gun, scissors and a black marker.

Out to the garage to get some bubble wrap. Last year I paid UPS almost $30 for 10' of bubble wrap. I complained about the price to my friend Jim and he told me about a wholesaler in the Falls that sold bubble wrap in bulk. So, I bought a honking huge roll for the princely sum of $27 (  I had to have my husband pick up with our neighbours trailer because we couldn't wedge the roll in the back of our extended van.) My husband suspended this huge roll from the ceiling in our garage which at the time I thought it was a smart way to store it - until today. I needed a ladder to pull back the plastic bag that was acting as a super size dust cover. Finally, I managed to cut about 6' off the roll.

I took Churchill off the mantle of the fireplace in the living room. Gently placed the two pieces of coreplast on each side of him, wrapped cardboard around the edges of the canvas and taped sides most securely. Then, cut a strip of bubble wrap, rolled & stuffed it in the bottom of the box. Rolled two more, laid them in at each side of the box and lowered Churchill into place. Rolled another sheet of bubble wrap laid it on top. I put the cardboard box end flaps in and pulled the side flaps together and taped the livin' day lights out of it!! So much work for such a little bear!! I'd hate to have to wrap the real thing - brings a whole new insight into the term "bear hug".

Churchill is off to the Post Office for his Express trip to the shores of Hudson Bay to begin a new lifeat the rectory of St. Paul's Anglican Church.

"Say Cheese" Churchill

Churchill has had his final touch ups. It's now time to take his pictures. No you cannot see him until I know Grace does. After all, Churchill Bear belongs to Grace. (he's very, very handsome).

Tomorrow I must begin to prepare Churchill for his long trip to his new home. I need to go to  Home Depot and get some coreplast to provide a rigid blanket to place him in, then lots of bubble wrap to protect him from the bumps along the way and finally a snug strong box in which to lay him.

He departs Tuesday for Churchill. He is going Express through Canada Post. It will be a long trip 7 business days. Churchill is very excited, as am I. Can't wait to see Graces' response to Churchill. I hope Bill will take her picture when she sees Churchill for the first time. Sooo exciting!!

Churchill Not Just A Prime Minister of the UK

Up early today, picking up Jim and dropping him at the Pelham Library for his classes today. Then over to the Town Hall to drop off promotion items for Summerfest to be put into the Artists Packages. I'm so very pleased that many of Jim's and my friends are backing us in this new show.It is such a pleasure to work with a group of people from Mayor Dave to all his staff that are going out of their way to make this Art Show happen. The Niagara Peninsula along with the City of Calgary have been designated as Canada's Art Capitals. It was very exciting when this was announced last  year and the Opening Gala of the Summerfest Art Show Friday July 20th will be called "Night of the Arts" and celebrations will be going on across the Niagara Peninsula.

I am putting finishing touches on Churchill today. No, I am not referring to the great Prime Minister of Britain(which I'm sure we'd all agree that he is complete, cigar and all), this Churchill is a bear, to be specific a Polar Bear.

My cousin Grace Coleman Anthony, who is the Anglican Minister of St.Paul's parish in Churchill Manitoba commissioned me to do a painting for her. She sent me two pictures one of a sled dog and one of a Polar bear that she had taken from her truck. Churchill the Polar bear spoke to me, he's magnificent as he lays on the tundra in the setting sun. I emailed Grace to let her know that he was almost finished. I needed to know from her which carriers deliver into Churchill and how to address the parcel. Previous to this I sent Grace a jpeg of the underpainting. I do this with all my commission clients so I can make any adjustments before I get to many hours into the work.

OMG! shipping rates to Churchill are way over the top. Wow! Plus adding insurance on top. Amazing! However the good news is that it will, depending which carrier Grace chooses, take approx.7 business days  unless of course it goes overland by Canada Post then it's up to 13 + business days which would make it at least 3weeks. No wonder, it is so expensive to live in the far North the shipping costs are phenomenal.

Now to find a suitable box and do the finishing touches to Churchill.

Twitter, Twitter. Tweet!!!

I am amazed at how adventuresome I am becoming on my laptop. I tweeted today for the first time ever. I listened to a symposium by Etsy last Friday on Marketing. They suggested that to get out there and meet folks online and develop a following for my Etsy store that I should Blog and Tweet. I have really no idea how this will pan out but I'll keep you informed of the results. I feel like a very tiny little frog in a very big pond.

I do know that since I have opened my Etsy store that traffic has picked up on my website. I check Google Analytics regularly to see how well advertising campaigns are going for Art Shows in which I'm involved. Etsy appears to be expanding my overseas exposure particularly London in the UK.

I wonder if the her majesty the Queen is looking at my work --- i hope she is not offended by the title of my solo show. Perhaps it's Kate and a group of her girl pals? How Fun to dream and conjecture!!LOL!

BAM! All Is Well With The World!

Today began early with a call from my friend Margorie asking if I was doing a BAM ( Barb's Art Mondays) & would I pick her and her daughter Dawn up. Then tea and toast. Made a quick lunch from leftovers. Printed additional painting ID cards for my show at the Rosberg Gallery to give to my friend Jim who said he'd take them to the Gallery saving me a trip to the Falls.

Lori came in with Nash and asked if we could order the Wedding invitations from Julie who runs an Etsy store called A Little Chic A Little Shabby. I convoed  Julie with the order along with some last minute instructions from Lori. Whoever when I went to pay for the order Pay Pal would not let it go through because the store indicated that it didn't ship to Canada ---- Convo Julie back and forth a couple of times still didn't work. Told Lori I'd try when I got back home.

On Line Banking supposed to save time aggravation etc ----- they lie! ( Keep in mind CNN reported a big breach with all major credit cards over the weekend) I needed to move some money this morning from my chequing to savings to cover the additional cost of the wedding invitations. Easy Peasy! No Problemo --- wrong! I couldn't get into my account it kept rejecting my password---- after 4 tries and now late to pick up Margorie & Dawn I gave up and decided the winds of war were upon me and I should just leave it until I got home.

Had a fab day with the group of friends I paint with every Monday. This is a delightfully irreverant group
that love to laugh, discuss their worldly views and help each other through tough times from family problems to health problems several have had cancer, diabetes, stroke, blood pressure. celiac disease etc But, through our great friendship and love of art we have become a very strong support group for each other. Today I finished a painting( I think ---- well maybe) and I got some work done on a commission piece. When I drove home I felt great all the worries from early this morning were gone -- or at least put into perspective.Plus I managed to get over to the town offices in Pelham to pick up some advertisng material for Summerfest.

Tired when I finally got home, Will made us a quick supper and a cup of tea. I then managed to rectify the problems of the morning. Yeah! Julie had sorted her problems with her store and I successfully ordered the Invitations. Plus tried the online banking again.Change dmy password and "Bob's your Uncle" all is right with the world!!  Tomorrow will be a great day!

The Queen is Hung and They all said YEAH!!!!!

The Queen is hung along with the rest of the show. Yeah!  Jim as usual was a life saver as my husband was hanging kitchen cupboards at my son's. Jim quickly sized up the group of paintings, made some excellent suggestions and we got stuck in and in no time the show was up. Just one or two glitches with the hanging system which we over came with a little creativity and a few sponges.

A lady dropped in as we were hanging and seemed to gravitate to a painting called Morning Star Cottage. She asked how long the show would hang,I told her a month. She said she wanted to bring her 84 year old Mom to see it. I suggested she might like to bring her to the official opening Saturday the 14th. she thought that was a great idea as it would be her Mom's birthday. How lovely to have such a positive start.
Jim and I went to Timmy's for a pop and a tea.

Went back to my son's picked up my Grandpuppy and drove home  to Welland to do the laundry and make dinner. Got home. Took Nash (grandpuppy) for a walk----widdled on each and very tree. Unloaded empty boxes, tool bags and easels. Put on a load of whites. Put on a pot of tea, sat and had a cuppa before starting dinner, Grandpuppy had a big bone. BUT HE"S EYEING UP MY COOKIE THAT I'M HAVING WITH MY TEA -----omg the droole!!!!

Saturday 31 March 2012

Oh my gosh!!! Finally the end is near. Postcards are done, little note cards are made, buttons will be ordered from an Etsy supplier just awaiting a response to a quiry. I've been assured they'll arrive on time. Yeah!

Just have to find my guest journal - must have a look around the studio - I'm sure it's in the bookcase or on a shelf under the coffee table.  Then everything will be sorted and all I have to do is pack the van. Thank goodness the 3' x 4' paintings will lay flat in the back. Must remember to take show bag with  the sponges, touch up,  taki, measuring tape and hammer.

Tomorrow will be fun. Looking forward to set up. It's always interesting to see my paintings in a different setting and with different lighting. My friend Jim is coming to lend a hand and his expertise. Always good to have another set of eyes and pair of hands, particularly when setting up using a different hanging system.

Good Saturday Morning to Ya'll!

The morning began with a uop of herbal tea and a hot cross bun. We begin slooowly here on the weekends usually.

A run down to the studio to pick a couple of paintings to put into Indulgence Bakery. Local artists participating in the Pelham Art Festival are asked to place a painting or 2 in a local business as away to promote the festival. It always amazes me that some locals have never been to the art festival or even know it exists in their town where they have lived all their lives. The festival is now in it's 26th year and we have juried artists from across the province of Ontario and the US.

Multi tasking, multi tasking ran from bakery to grocery store for some fresh veggies and chicken. Got home in time for my husband to tell me I had 2 calls while I was out one from my cousin re, my son's wedding in Mexico and the other from an artist who was running late getting a cheque to me for the Summerfest Art Show which I manage.

The excitement is beginning to build already for the new show season. Here it's kicked off with the Gala evening for the Pelham Art Festival were 65artists will be showing their new work for 2012. It's so much fun to hug friends and wish them well. We have live music, wine and munchies for the Gala. The Festival is a three day event. Saturday evening there is a pot luck BBQ for the artists held at a local farm. Everyone kicks back and there is lively chatter about the up coming season, new works, etc.

Must put finishing touches to "The Queen's Backside Show". Still need to create & print a final list of paintings with prices. Additional signage, and small blank note card run to use as give aways during the reception. I think I'll check my friends on Etsy to see if I can get perhaps some buttons or magnets to use as give aways too. Gotta love the creative pool that I can draw from on Etsy.

The Queen's Backside & The Niagara Peninsula

Today is Friday, the studio is busy,it's is cluttered with boxes, paintings, tape guns, packing materials (love to pop the bubbles). What's up? The Queen's Backside is what's up. A new solo show for the Rosberg Gallery. The title for the show comes from a small plein aire painting I did of the back of the buildings on Queen Street in Niagara Falls Canada. I know it's a little irreverent but what they hey it's catchy and fun.

Well after getting the paintings ready I decided to tackle making postcards on my computer. I should preface this by saying that generic products from a business supply can be a royal pain in the tuckas!
The generic box of post cards stated quite clearly that it was the same as Avery #. Well they fib!! Half of the post cards were ruined because the fronts did not print the complete layout. Next time I'll go to an online print company. Even old (er) artists can learn new tricks!
