TO NON DEPLUME OR NOT??

June 10th is Niagara Gallery's opening of the 1812 exhibition. It will be interesting to see if "HMS SECORD" wins any prize money or if it sinks. I have great doubts it was done tongue in cheek. My mentor Jim Kerr suggested that I sign the work with a non de plume as it is so far out from what is my norm. I decided to sign it with my grandmothers name. I did this for two reasons, she herself was an artist and she had one heck of a sense of humour.

I decided to paint Laura because she has been such a subject of controversy in my art circles this year. Everyone seems to have an opinion as to where she and her cow walked to warn the British that the Americans were coming. I did a lot of research into the Battle of Chippawa & the war of 1812, learning about who was involved, what they wore (men & women), flags of the British ( it appeared that almost every admiral had his own), ships in the two fleets etc.

I am meeting Jim, (who also put a painting into the competition) tomorrow and we are going to the opening. I think it will be great fun to see all the paintings that were entered. Jim's a fabulous artist. It will be interesting to see what he entered. Hopefully, he will win a prize.
