Niagara & Calgary Cultural Capitals of Canada

Wow! How very exciting that the world will discover our secret. We are a cultural hub twinned with Calgary, Alberta. The Canadian government is celebrating and promoting Canadian culture and we are so fortunate to be artists living and working in the Niagara Peninsula. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to meet with Niagara regional representatives to discuss how this will impact the Pelham Summerfest Art Show and the artists of Pelham.

The Summerfest Art show is a juried professional art show and as a group of professional artists we enjoy mentoring and encouraging amateur artists to hone their skills through classes and workshops like those provided by the Pelham Art Association.

Mary Powley a local professional fine artist and president of the Pelham Art Association works very hard to find professional instructors for the classes & workshops offered by the club. This year we are very pleased that James Kerr a well known Niagara fine artist and retired Commercial Artist is our class instructor. James teaches Drawing, Watercolour and Acrylics. Once a month the association has a workshop and we hire professional fine artists from Canada and the US. At these workshops, you will find both amateur and professional artists woking side by side to develop new skill sets and techniques.

The Pelham Art Association will encourage it's members to participate in the All Call to artists that will be put out by the town of Pelham to actively participate in the Niagara Night of the Arts, Friday, July 20th 2012.

Summerfest First Annual Art Show

I am so excited to be organizing this juried art show for the town of Pelham. Right from Mayor Dave's office down everyone has been very supportive and helpful. It is so very nice to have the full backing of the town. We know that what we are doing will be appreciated. We are all working very hard to have this be a very special event for everyone. The artists have been notified this week if they are in the show and I am very pleased to say we will have an exceptional group of Niagara artists showing and selling their work.Pelham Summerfest in it's second year. The juried art show is a new addition to Summerfest. More news soon. Follow my blog or tweets @patriciahaftar.com

Someone This Way Cometh

Sadie, Sadie beautiful lady. After much discussion, Laura's cow has now been officially named Sadie. After all she is an important component of the story and painting and therefore deserves a name.

I am thing about adding some fabulous native indians who were aiding in the battle.

Soon, Laura will once again cause a bit of a stir when she is formally presented to the public. Keep up with my blogs to see an unveiling of Laura. I'll be interested in any comments you may have.

Laura & her Cow

My friend and mentor Jim suggested that I might enter a painting for the Niagara Gallery's  War of 1812 Competition. Personally, I have heard about, worried about and seen wars through the eye's of television since I was a young child. I remember huddling under our desks at school during an atom bomb drill because Russia planted 90 nuclear war heads in Cuba. Man's inhumanity towards his fellow man. I lack the motivation and inspiration to do a piece about this particular war or any war for that matter. I see only great sorrow for families on both sides of the conflicts.

But,there is a story about a very brave woman Laura Secord who risked her own life to warn the British  general of an imminent American attack during the war of 1812. I find her story interesting enough to make satirical comment. In my art group, there has been much discussion regarding Laura and her cow, mostly about where exactly Laura was living at the time and where exactly she found the general.

Being a Torontonian for most of my life, Laura's comings and goings were not a pressing intellectual problem of mine. I was just happy she warned the general and that we had not become the largest state in the union.( whatever would the Texan's have done!)

I began this painting initially with the idea of having it reflect the present day reality of what used to be a bloody battle field. But, Laura kept popping into my head and the on going dog gnawing on a bone discussion about her true home & where exactly she went to find the british. I discussed this with a fellow artist and he suggested that perhaps I should do a surrealistic painting and add Laura( and her cow) into the mix. So I did a little research on the battle at Chippewa, Laura, cows, row boats & war ships of 1812 and native indians. I gathered up the ideas and started to sketch Laura in a row boat crossing the Chippewa River. It made me giggle and worry about Laura being flipped into the drink with a honking huge cow on top of her ---then where would we have been??? But, what to do with the cow, bossy was an integral part of the story. Not wanting to insult all cows, I made her into a cartoon and put her in the stern of the row boat and had her hold a parasol to keep the sun from getting in her big brown eyes. What an absolutely silly idea! I picked up my paint brush and added this whimsical crazy idea to the realistic landscape.

It makes me laugh to think in 200 years we humans are still so arrogant that we think wars will solve problems.

Laura and her cow is still a work in progress.

(After thought, I think the cows' parisole should have a Union Jack pattern on it.) I think I'll sign this painting with a non de plume ----- maybe,

Solo, Taxes & Things that go Bump in the Night!

Today was prep for the opening of my solo show " The Queen's Backside and the Niagara Peninsula". My friend Jim is coming to lend support tomorrow, which I really appreciate. I have made two trays of gourmet sandwiches and have purchased come pre made goodies. Tomorrow I'll go to Timmy's and get some jugs of coffee. They'll supply cups and condiments.  I hope clients and friends will come. This show has been put together at the last minute with little advertising, We could be eating sandwiches for the next week!

Today was also tax remit day for Haftar Studio. OMG! Last year was a disaster for sales. The economy has certainly tanked and artists are at the bottom of the totem pole. I hope and pray this year will be much better for all artists. "Churchill" was a good start for me for the 2012 year. Perhaps he'll bring good luck!

Thanks to all my dear friends who came out to support me at the opening of my solo show. You all know who you are. Mary you know you are my favourite. (lol) I met some very interesting new artists one gentleman who was a professor of literature from China and who does chinese watercolours and calligraphy and another young man who is trying to make a living as an abstract artist. It was interesting to hear peoples reaction to Woodends. Thank you all for coming to the show.

I'd also like to thank the staff at the Niagara Library who were so accommodating and helpful.

Boxer's or Brief

Churchill prefers boxer's.

He's boxed and delivered to the Canada Post Office in Welland from where he will be shipped out today heading on his journey to Churchill. It would be fabulous if he could video tape & describe the journey from the front seat of the truck&/ or the plane.

Brief: This is the very short version of a much longer tale. Know the size of thy Boxer's after copious phone calls to various expediters last week to ascertain best travel prices and conditions for Churchill. Grace decided he should travel Express Canada Post. I made an assumption as to the size of box and Churchill's approximate weight including all the warm blankets he'd need to go to the far north.Well their was more  emphasis on the ass( as in Jack) than in the umption. This ended up costing an additional $20 + in Churchill's ticket north. Although he weighed 5 lbs less than anticipated his box was approx.16 sq. inches larger than anticipated. Oh my!

I cannot wait till Grace see's Churchill for the first time. I hope it is love at first sight! Then I'll introduce him to all of you.

A very exciting week in the Haftar Studio's. Churchill is off to a new home and My reception at the Rosberg Gallery on Saturday afternoon.

Hear All About It! Churchill Wrapped Up in Welland!

Churchills' picture has been taken ready for his debut in 10 days time on www.patriciahaftar.com, Facebook and Twitter.
Off to the Falls to go to Home Depot for coreplast to support Churchill in his travels.Asked young prepubescent young man for directions - he hadn't a clue about what coreplast was and had a total vacant look on his face when I said it was white plastic formed like cardboard. He was kind enough to find an older employee who knew exactly where to look. 1st part of the mission accomplished, I am know the proud owner of two sheets of 18 x24inch coreplast. Bravo me!

Trying to buy a cardboard box on Easter weekend provide to be more elusive than eggs at an Easter Egg hunt. First stop, the Moving company store - only suitable shaped box was a mirror box - very flimsy and I'd certainly not want to put anything as heavy as a mirror in it - let alone how pricey this flimsy box was.
Then on to UPS - cross town - WOW closed all 3 days of the Holiday weekend. Who knew? Slowly starting to pull ones hair out, it comes to me that Staples might have a packing box as they are a Purolator depot. Merde! No joy there either. Gave up went home.

As I skillfully slide my derriere out of the van inspiration hit!( Often happens when I get off my ----) I have packing boxes from a new shipment of canvases, brilliant!

Went down in the studio found said box, emptied it.collected up tape gun, scissors and a black marker.

Out to the garage to get some bubble wrap. Last year I paid UPS almost $30 for 10' of bubble wrap. I complained about the price to my friend Jim and he told me about a wholesaler in the Falls that sold bubble wrap in bulk. So, I bought a honking huge roll for the princely sum of $27 (  I had to have my husband pick up with our neighbours trailer because we couldn't wedge the roll in the back of our extended van.) My husband suspended this huge roll from the ceiling in our garage which at the time I thought it was a smart way to store it - until today. I needed a ladder to pull back the plastic bag that was acting as a super size dust cover. Finally, I managed to cut about 6' off the roll.

I took Churchill off the mantle of the fireplace in the living room. Gently placed the two pieces of coreplast on each side of him, wrapped cardboard around the edges of the canvas and taped sides most securely. Then, cut a strip of bubble wrap, rolled & stuffed it in the bottom of the box. Rolled two more, laid them in at each side of the box and lowered Churchill into place. Rolled another sheet of bubble wrap laid it on top. I put the cardboard box end flaps in and pulled the side flaps together and taped the livin' day lights out of it!! So much work for such a little bear!! I'd hate to have to wrap the real thing - brings a whole new insight into the term "bear hug".

Churchill is off to the Post Office for his Express trip to the shores of Hudson Bay to begin a new lifeat the rectory of St. Paul's Anglican Church.

"Say Cheese" Churchill

Churchill has had his final touch ups. It's now time to take his pictures. No you cannot see him until I know Grace does. After all, Churchill Bear belongs to Grace. (he's very, very handsome).

Tomorrow I must begin to prepare Churchill for his long trip to his new home. I need to go to  Home Depot and get some coreplast to provide a rigid blanket to place him in, then lots of bubble wrap to protect him from the bumps along the way and finally a snug strong box in which to lay him.

He departs Tuesday for Churchill. He is going Express through Canada Post. It will be a long trip 7 business days. Churchill is very excited, as am I. Can't wait to see Graces' response to Churchill. I hope Bill will take her picture when she sees Churchill for the first time. Sooo exciting!!

Churchill Not Just A Prime Minister of the UK

Up early today, picking up Jim and dropping him at the Pelham Library for his classes today. Then over to the Town Hall to drop off promotion items for Summerfest to be put into the Artists Packages. I'm so very pleased that many of Jim's and my friends are backing us in this new show.It is such a pleasure to work with a group of people from Mayor Dave to all his staff that are going out of their way to make this Art Show happen. The Niagara Peninsula along with the City of Calgary have been designated as Canada's Art Capitals. It was very exciting when this was announced last  year and the Opening Gala of the Summerfest Art Show Friday July 20th will be called "Night of the Arts" and celebrations will be going on across the Niagara Peninsula.

I am putting finishing touches on Churchill today. No, I am not referring to the great Prime Minister of Britain(which I'm sure we'd all agree that he is complete, cigar and all), this Churchill is a bear, to be specific a Polar Bear.

My cousin Grace Coleman Anthony, who is the Anglican Minister of St.Paul's parish in Churchill Manitoba commissioned me to do a painting for her. She sent me two pictures one of a sled dog and one of a Polar bear that she had taken from her truck. Churchill the Polar bear spoke to me, he's magnificent as he lays on the tundra in the setting sun. I emailed Grace to let her know that he was almost finished. I needed to know from her which carriers deliver into Churchill and how to address the parcel. Previous to this I sent Grace a jpeg of the underpainting. I do this with all my commission clients so I can make any adjustments before I get to many hours into the work.

OMG! shipping rates to Churchill are way over the top. Wow! Plus adding insurance on top. Amazing! However the good news is that it will, depending which carrier Grace chooses, take approx.7 business days  unless of course it goes overland by Canada Post then it's up to 13 + business days which would make it at least 3weeks. No wonder, it is so expensive to live in the far North the shipping costs are phenomenal.

Now to find a suitable box and do the finishing touches to Churchill.

Twitter, Twitter. Tweet!!!

I am amazed at how adventuresome I am becoming on my laptop. I tweeted today for the first time ever. I listened to a symposium by Etsy last Friday on Marketing. They suggested that to get out there and meet folks online and develop a following for my Etsy store that I should Blog and Tweet. I have really no idea how this will pan out but I'll keep you informed of the results. I feel like a very tiny little frog in a very big pond.

I do know that since I have opened my Etsy store that traffic has picked up on my website. I check Google Analytics regularly to see how well advertising campaigns are going for Art Shows in which I'm involved. Etsy appears to be expanding my overseas exposure particularly London in the UK.

I wonder if the her majesty the Queen is looking at my work --- i hope she is not offended by the title of my solo show. Perhaps it's Kate and a group of her girl pals? How Fun to dream and conjecture!!LOL!

BAM! All Is Well With The World!

Today began early with a call from my friend Margorie asking if I was doing a BAM ( Barb's Art Mondays) & would I pick her and her daughter Dawn up. Then tea and toast. Made a quick lunch from leftovers. Printed additional painting ID cards for my show at the Rosberg Gallery to give to my friend Jim who said he'd take them to the Gallery saving me a trip to the Falls.

Lori came in with Nash and asked if we could order the Wedding invitations from Julie who runs an Etsy store called A Little Chic A Little Shabby. I convoed  Julie with the order along with some last minute instructions from Lori. Whoever when I went to pay for the order Pay Pal would not let it go through because the store indicated that it didn't ship to Canada ---- Convo Julie back and forth a couple of times still didn't work. Told Lori I'd try when I got back home.

On Line Banking supposed to save time aggravation etc ----- they lie! ( Keep in mind CNN reported a big breach with all major credit cards over the weekend) I needed to move some money this morning from my chequing to savings to cover the additional cost of the wedding invitations. Easy Peasy! No Problemo --- wrong! I couldn't get into my account it kept rejecting my password---- after 4 tries and now late to pick up Margorie & Dawn I gave up and decided the winds of war were upon me and I should just leave it until I got home.

Had a fab day with the group of friends I paint with every Monday. This is a delightfully irreverant group
that love to laugh, discuss their worldly views and help each other through tough times from family problems to health problems several have had cancer, diabetes, stroke, blood pressure. celiac disease etc But, through our great friendship and love of art we have become a very strong support group for each other. Today I finished a painting( I think ---- well maybe) and I got some work done on a commission piece. When I drove home I felt great all the worries from early this morning were gone -- or at least put into perspective.Plus I managed to get over to the town offices in Pelham to pick up some advertisng material for Summerfest.

Tired when I finally got home, Will made us a quick supper and a cup of tea. I then managed to rectify the problems of the morning. Yeah! Julie had sorted her problems with her store and I successfully ordered the Invitations. Plus tried the online banking again.Change dmy password and "Bob's your Uncle" all is right with the world!!  Tomorrow will be a great day!

The Queen is Hung and They all said YEAH!!!!!

The Queen is hung along with the rest of the show. Yeah!  Jim as usual was a life saver as my husband was hanging kitchen cupboards at my son's. Jim quickly sized up the group of paintings, made some excellent suggestions and we got stuck in and in no time the show was up. Just one or two glitches with the hanging system which we over came with a little creativity and a few sponges.

A lady dropped in as we were hanging and seemed to gravitate to a painting called Morning Star Cottage. She asked how long the show would hang,I told her a month. She said she wanted to bring her 84 year old Mom to see it. I suggested she might like to bring her to the official opening Saturday the 14th. she thought that was a great idea as it would be her Mom's birthday. How lovely to have such a positive start.
Jim and I went to Timmy's for a pop and a tea.

Went back to my son's picked up my Grandpuppy and drove home  to Welland to do the laundry and make dinner. Got home. Took Nash (grandpuppy) for a walk----widdled on each and very tree. Unloaded empty boxes, tool bags and easels. Put on a load of whites. Put on a pot of tea, sat and had a cuppa before starting dinner, Grandpuppy had a big bone. BUT HE"S EYEING UP MY COOKIE THAT I'M HAVING WITH MY TEA -----omg the droole!!!!
